Summer  Knights Newsletter - November 2000, Volume 2

Greetings to all Goode Knights, Squires, Friends and Patrons interested in the continuing progress of Summer Knights and Chivalry in Action!  Lord Magnus and Lady Branwyn once again send forth a missive informing the populace of deeds both great and small and Knightly-News concerning the Summer Knights program.  As usual, we extend an invitation to all whom are interested in our program to send us their email address and, for those of you who already receive the newsletter, forward it to others; let others know about Summer Knights!

 Registration has begun!

The Session dates for this year are:

            1)    Session One: June 18 to June 29

2)    Session Two: July 2 to July 13

3)    Session Three*: July 16 to July 27

(*note: session three is contingent upon a minimum enrollment of 20 knights.  If the minimum is not met, knights registered must accept space in session 1 or 2.  No refunds will be given for any session.)

For both new and returning knights there is good news!  We have developed a new approach to registration resulting in a lower price and greater payment options!

The registration process is divided in three parts (don’t worry, it’s not confusing):

           1)    Membership Registration:

Includes all registration forms, signed and dated, and $199 Registration Fee

2)   The Summer Knights Fundraiser Event (February, 2001) Each knight must raise at least $99 of his own fees.

3)    A final payment for tuition and materials of $99; due before June 1st

In short, the Knight’s benefactors (i.e. Mom and Dad) pay the first $199 and the last payment of $99, but the knight himself is responsible for the other $99.  This offers the knight a taste of earning his own way and, as the fundraising event has a community-service project attached, will offer the knight an opportunity to serve others.

Knights can also opt to pay for the program all at once ($398) or stagger the payments ($199 registration) and pay the remaining balance in two $99 payments; one before the fundraiser, the other before June 1st.  In any case, sign up early and guarantee your space amongst the Chivalry; it makes a great Christmas gift!

Summer Knights has also started a PayPal account (see the bottom of Summer Knights website) and can also accept credit card payments (Visa/MasterCard) online.  Please contact us prior to using PayPal so that all the transfers go smoothly.

Regardless of how each knight chooses to pay for the program, the changes were made to offer greater flexibility and greater payment options and thus, allow more knights to fulfill their dreams and learn Chivalry in Action!

Summer Knights Now Offers Garb and Archery Packages for Knights!

After countless requests for both Garb (medieval/renaissance clothing) and Archery supplies, Summer Knights has begun a program of packages that address both these needs and more, called Knightly Needs.

 1)  The Knight’s Garb: In an effort to help Knights dress, well…like Knights, we have put together a basic package of clothing including:  A renaissance/medieval shirt, a pair of fighting pants, knee boots and a super-long belt for $99 plus tax and shipping

  2)  The King's Archer:  In order to help Knights enter the sport of archery, we have assembled a simple, beginner’s archery package that includes:  A 30 lb. fiberglass bow, a half dozen arrows, a shooting tab and a bag target for $99 plus tax and shipping

Hopefully, this will help you find the garb and archery gear you need to make a lasting impression on the battlefield and at Chivalry Court!

Summer Knights Expands their Web Presence

As stated in the October Newsletter, Summer Knights and the Master Knights will be at the first annual Redlands Renaissance Faire, January 19, 29 and 21.  As of November, Summer Knights has been added to their new website and are proud to among the first participants of a Renaissance Faire that we are sure will be a great success.  Even though it is early, Lord Magnus and Lady Branwyn would love to invite you to the faire!  Please make plans to meet us there and cry a loud Huzzah! when we knights strike a blow for Chivalry in Action!

Also in web-news, last month the Summer Knights were included in the National Renaissance Faire and Guild Directory at www.faires.com.  Summer Knights is located under the heading of Guilds.

The Master Knights

The Master Knights have been active in training with sword and shield in preparation for the upcoming Renaissance Faires.  Specifically, they have been working on using some prototype sword weapons Lord Magnus has designed.  For those of you who have been through the program, you can probably envision the following hybrid sword: It has the steel basket of the rattan weapons (i.e. Lord Magnus’ sword) and the blade of the regular boffer weapons.  This combination offers better balance, speed and accuracy but at a significant cost increase!  His Lordship and her Ladyship are weighing all the options now, and are going to base their decisions on all available information; we’ll keep you posted.

Four of the Master Knights (Lord Mathias, Lord Eric, Sir Daniel and Sir Richard) ran an archery day for a sixth-grade literature class last Friday; seven hours of shooting and coaching!  They handled the new archers perfectly and showed them to have respect for the bow and for their fellow archers.   Truly they are both knights and leaders.  Well done lads!

Lord Eric the Immaculate has just bought a new bow.  Although deadly accurate before, we’re sure he’ll impress even the most experienced with his new bow.  Also, Lord Eric broke his first sword blade in single combat at a recent Master’s Combat Practice.  Perhaps, henceforth we should address him as

Lord Eric, the Sword Breaker!

At the Summer Knights Armoury, Sir Daniel has not only turned a year older on November 6th (he’s now 15!), he has turned out some truly spectacular pieces of Armour.  His new coif design (a full head piece in six-in-one!) is indeed a work of art!  It has the capacity to virtually stand on its own, and can withstand untold amounts of punishment.  As a side note, the Knight’s chain he produced for me is stunning in both appearance and craftsmanship.  Sir Daniel is, no doubt, a King’s Armourer!  We salute him on his grand efforts, and once again, offer him a sincere Happy Birthday.  HUZZAH!

Lord Calum has been busy removing/rebuilding his grandfather’s roof.  He has gained insight and understanding in the fields of destruction and construction and has certainly worked on his sword arm with the help of his trusty hammer.  All of his sword opponents best be careful when they meet him next!

Lord Ulfkell, the Viking, recently told us of his busy schedule over the last two months: he has either been attending tournaments (fighting with his swords) or at forensic and debate tournaments (fighting with his words).  We know that in either quest, he will succeed with Honour and Chivalry.  Fight on Lord Ulfkell!

Until next time M’Lords and M’Ladies.

Yours in Chivalry,

Lord Magnus and Lady Branwyn
